Growth of slaverys role in the 17th and 18th centuries Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Between the beginning of the first British settlement of Jamestown in, 1607, and the eve of the American Revolution, 1775, slavery’s importance as it pertained to the southern colonies economies. The first slaves were indentured servants. Indentured servants were hired to work the fields and instead of being paid with money, they were given a place to stay, food, and other basic necessities. However, the indentured servant wasn’t completely free, they signed a contract saying that they were their owner’s property for a certain amount of years, usually no longer then 7, and that is when they would be set free with a plot of land. Overtime the idea of indentured servant fizzled out and due to key social events, geographic areas, and a changing economy the stereotypical idea of a slave began to take over. The social events were had perhaps the most influence on this growth of slavery. Slaves had always attempted to run-away from or rebel against their plantations and this obviously upset the owners.
