East Egg, West Egg, and Valley of Ashes significantly define the theme of F. Scott Fitzgerald�s The Great Gatsby. The setting and characters illustrate the differences of class, wealth, and social status which truly symbolize the essence of the American dream in the roaring twenties. These three specific settings shed insight on the lifestyle of the traditional wealth in the East, the modern lavish wealth of West, and the desolation and poverty in The Valley of Ashes.
