Many films do not live up to the expectations set by the plays or novels they are adapted from. In one such case, The Chalk Garden a film directed by Ronald Neame portrays the story as well if not better than the play The Chalk Garden written by Enid Bagnol. Ronald Neame�s interpretation of the play allows readers to better understand the psyches o f both Laurel and her governess, the mysterious Madrigal. While in many instances the film is more palpable than the play, there are also areas in which the film falls short. The overall effect of the film, however, is more terrific and horrifying than that of the play. Our first impression of the colorful character of Laurel is given to us at the beginning at both of the works. There are several women answering to the advertisement that Laurel�s grandmother, the lavish Madame St. Maugham, has placed in the newspaper for a governess. Each of these women looks the part but as Laurel begins her intimidation process, they fall short. Only one strange and silent woman remains.
