The irrational fear of being alone can cause individuals physical pain, emotional and psychological pain, and hinder the potential progress of their lives. Some people have the fear of living alone. These types of people will continue to live with a roommate or family member just so they do not have to go home and be alone. Other people are afraid of being without companionship. These types of people stay in relationships with people who may not be of good consequential influence on their lives. There are some people in this world that are so fearful of being alone, or of being without companionship, that they will stay in a relationship with a partner that physically abuses them. The trepidation is so great that these people will prolong staying with the abuser even to the point of being murdered by the abuser. This is because, to the individual with the fear of being alone, death is far less terrifying than the notion of being alone.
