Katherine Mansfield�s short story �The Fly� portrays an un-named character �the boss� whose life has been destroyed after receiving the news regarding his son�s death at war. The fly symbolizes the boss�s son and the boss�s actions towards the fly demonstrate his desire to be in power. The relationship between the controlling boss and the fly portrays the boss�s degrading mental state caused by his son�s death. The deteriorating mental state of the boss is demonstrated through his abnormal reaction towards his son�s death and the torturing of an innocent life. The unwilling death of the boss�s only son destroyed his expectations of his child taking over the business. The boss had been training his son about the business and the sudden death of his child did not bring suffering upon him, it was more a trouble to the father. �The boy had been in the office learning the ropes for a year � and what congratulations he had received as the boy�s father!� (Mansfield 427).
