As members of any society, people must follow certain rules. These rules can be laws set forth by a court of law or they can be ethical as determined by the beliefs of society. Ethical systems were created to help determine right from wrong for society, but may not necessarily be determined by a court of law. There are two major ethical systems, each with their own sub-system. Deontological ethical systems judge right and wrong by the inherent nature of the act, not the consequences of the act. In other words, as long as the intentions of the act were for good, even if the consequences were bad, the act itself is still judged as an ethical act. Teleological ethical systems judge the consequences of the act. This means that no matter the intentions of the act, if the consequences are not good, the act is not good. It also stands to reason with the teleological ethical system, that if an act appears bad, if the consequences are positive then the act is ethical.
