In the short stories “Mirrorings” by Lucy Grealy and “Black Swans” by Lauren Slater, two women reveal their individual stories of the hardships and struggles associated with battling and overcoming a life changing disease. Rather than focusing on overcoming the physical anguishes they experience, both women concentrate on conquering the emotional pain that their respective ailments have caused them. Although the two authors have diseases that affect different aspects of the human anatomy, as Grealy possesses a physical affliction and Slater copes with a mental shortcoming, the women use similar tactics to defeat their illnesses. Originally feeling negativity and pessimism towards their problems, Grealy and Slater used specific methods to cope and later overcome their respective diseases, and their emotional states eventually evolved into those of acceptance and understanding.
