Children are being socialized into gender roles through products that we consume. I went into Meijer to see how toys and greeting cards were doing this. There are both positive and negative functions of gendering. There are many obvious ways that we separate �girl toys� from �boy toys� but there are also many subtle ways that are displayed through packaging and slogans. This could also be carrying on into our adult lives and influencing the roles that we play as adults, spouses and parents. I will look at all sides of the issue and determine if this division between genders is negative or positive. Toys are just one way that children are socialized into gender roles. It begins with the way the toys are packaged. This sends the message that girls need to be girly girls and like pink and purple. The boys need to be masculine and not like pink. The wording on the packages also suggests the same things. I think that both of these are negative functions because children should be able to be themselves.
