Phantom Palace by Isabelle Allende is a story of the personal conflict of a dictator in San Jeronimo, El Benefactor, which conveys the strenuous and yet transient struggle between a person¡¯s happiness and ambition. The conflict deviates from the usual interpersonal conflicts of most stories. Instead, it is intrapersonal, and the protagonist and antagonist are himself. El Benefactor, who is the only truly developed character in the story, is both the reason for and the victim of the conflict. Though there are smaller conflicts of the dictator with the Indians and the diplomat, who can also be called partial antagonists, the central plot of the story revolves around the conflict between the two different sides of the dictator. One side of El Benefactor is a rational and ambitious man who wants to gain a full control over himself; the other side is a man who has just discovered love and happiness and therefore wants to put down all his power in front of Marcia.
