The Secret Life of Bees The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd is a book about growing up with racism in the south from the eyes of a young girl. Lily is a fourteen year old Caucasian girl that lives with her dad and their housekeeper, Rosaleen. They live on a peach farm in Sylvan, South Carolina. Lily’s mother, Deborah, died when she was a little girl. Lily is told from her father that she killed her mother. Lily ends up leaving the house with Rosaleen, her housekeeper, and sets off to go find out information about her mother. She meets August Boatwright, an African American, who lives in the town of Tiburon, South Carolina where she discovers more about who her mom was. The community August lives in is all African American. August and her family are beekeepers, so when Lily arrived to their place, she had to help them make honey. Lily ends up meeting a boy named Zach that helps her how to get the honey. When school starts again in the fall, she meets many friends along with Zach that attend this school. At the very end of the story Lily ends up living with August Boatwright and......
