Medi�val Language and Literature In this essay, I shall explore the relationship between the material and the spiritual in two Old English elegies, �The Seafarer� and �The Dream of the Rood". In �The Seafarer�, I will demonstrate how the narrator takes the reader on a literal and metaphorical journey, overseas and towards god. In �The Dream of the Rood�, I will demonstrate how the poem takes the reader from the material and the earthly, and develops the narrative through to the spiritual. I will argue that the tree as the central subject to the poem acts as a conduct from the material through to the spiritual. These poems derive from the Germanic people portraying their way of life and beliefs; they originate from one of only four manuscripts around the time of 1072 CE. First of all, it becomes apparent that, �The Seafarer� is a classic form of an elegy with its direct theme of exile and longing; it draws the reader into a world full of hardship and loneliness, portrayed through an unidentified character that is exiled from society and the security of his home life and assoc......
