Adolescence is the time period most often associated with experimentation and/or abuse of such substances as drugs, alcohol and tobacco. Substance use can prove to have major implications for adolescent development mainly because of the fact that an adolescent is still in the process of developing physically, psychologically and socially. In addition to considering the risk factors for substance use among adolescents identified by researchers, examining the issue requires that we also take into account the various sources of influence confronting adolescents at such an impressionable and dynamic time in their life. Schools have taken certain measures in an attempt to prevent substance use among adolescents. Brain function during adolescence enters a unique flux (White, 2004 ). The dramatic change in behaviors during this time is directly related to this flux.
