Black Holes Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Black Holes remain one of the most mysterious, and interesting things in the universe. A black hole is the remains of a massive star that has used its nuclear energy (Nagel 1). The English geologist John Michell and French astronomer Pierre-Simon Laplace first came up with the idea in the 1800’s (Nagel 1). Scientists have studied many years over the evidence, types and formations of black holes. Black holes, unfortunately, cannot be seen by the naked eye. Since an object has to travel faster than the speed of light to escape a black hole, nothing can escape the gravity of a black hole (Nagel 1). Therefore, nothing, not even light can be viewed while inside (Nagel 1). Even though black holes cannot be seen, the evidence of them is everywhere. First of all, black holes cannot be seen because matter, light, and other forms of energy do not escape from them (Nagel 2). They can be detected, by their effect on objects in their vicinity (Nagel 2). Some scientists think that before an object projects into a black hole, the objects give off changeable X rays (Nagel 2).
