Respect. McMurphy�s one goal in life is that he be respected. It does not matter how he gains it all that matters to him is that he had it from everyone he ever met. Even when he was admitted into the ward he still wanted everyone�s respect and the one person who wouldn�t give him that respect was the Big Nurse. The other patients in the ward looked up to him because of the way he took on the leadership position. However the Nurse wouldn�t humor him and treated him just like she treated the rest of the patients; like incapable little kids. This instantly presented a challenge to McMurphy and from then on he was determined to do whatever it took to make the Big Nurse respect him and to keep the respect of the other patients. This mentality started a rivalry between the Big Nurse and McMurphy, which would go on until the very end. After reading the book and analyzing the rivalry between the Nurse and McMurphy, I feel that in the end McMurphy won the fight.
