Religion may be defined as the presence of a belief that is focused on a system of thought, person, object or unseen being that is considered supernatural, sacred, or holds the highest truth. According to philosopher, Karl Marx, “religion is the sigh of the oppressed creature, the heart of the heartless world, and the soul of the soulless conditions. It is the opium of the people.” In the effort of worshiping the systems within society, religion is used as a method controlling the consciousness of the mass. It allows people to feel better about the agony of being deprived, oppressed and exploited. In understanding the use of religion in society, one must first understand its purpose. In terms of socialization, religion is used as a means of sustaining order and maintaining a controlled state. In society, each group has it’s own unique system of beliefs that is obligatory to all its members.
