Importance of Style in Theodore Roethke’s Poem, “My Papa’s Waltz”
The poem “My Papa’s Waltz” is full of ironic and sarcastic gestures, for the title of the poem seems to suggest a son that is enjoying himself by Waltzing with his father: but later on the poem you could easily see that was not the case. The so-called waltz between a father and son ended up being more of an abuse than a lovely dance. Roethke uses the gestures and actions that would be common in doing the Waltz to reveal his emotions, and also gives the reader an image of what is happening. In real life, Roethke did not have a great relationship with his father, for he and his father always have differences; therefore, a small feud arose between them. The feud between Roethke and his father evidently became the end result of this poem “My Papa’s Waltz”; he lets the reader know that he was not enjoying this time spent with his father, and he uses a certain style, that is, a use of several literary elements to get this point across.
