The Pre-Socratics were the first philosophers, in a line of others who followed, who rejected the idea of mythology. They refused to believe that those stories which their societies embraced, explained the nature of all things and the �Arche� of all. Thus each philosopher used his rational thought to attempt these questions relating to nature of existence and change. Different explanations emerged, as each one opted to take a diverse perspective towards existence and creation. In the case of the Pre-Socratics, the first explanations, related to the existence of a basic principle which formed the �cosmos�. This gave way to more complex theories such as the introduction of atoms, which take up the �nothingness� of Parmenides� World. Thales, Anaximander and Anaximenes sought to determine the basic principle which defined everything around them. These �phusikoi� diverged from the viewpoint that everything was in order only due to the interference of anthropomorphised gods.
