In the years preceding World War One, the issue of woman�s suffrage was beginning to gain support through the actions of a variety of feminist activist groups such as the NAWSA, and the NWP. Through these groups women were voicing their opinions against the idea of �separate spheres� and the predetermined role of women in society. Along with women minorities, especially African Americans were facing hardships in the form of racism and segregation. Both of these groups strived to make a difference by voicing their opinions and attempted to change their roles in society and their status by taking the place of men who had gone off to war or even joining men in war ( or in military related positions because most women and African Americans did not physically fight in the war). Although through their involvement in wartime efforts, both women and minorities saw an increase in their status and a gained a more active role in the workforce, the lasting effects of the of the industrial war boom were limited.
