I disagree. Christians DO need the Old Testament (OT) as an �understanding of the Old Testament is the criterion and the basis for understanding the New� (Brunner, p264, 1964). The OT reaffirms the message of the New Testament (NT) that is there is only one God, one Word, and one Covenant (Brunner, 1964), that He wants a relationship with us, that faith is a response not a contract. It�s a place to discover our history and creation, His faithfulness. We need it to better understand where Jesus comes from � that He is the fulfilment of the New Covenant - and what He is talking about. We need the OT � �for [they] are the words he (Jesus) read ... the stories he knew ... the songs he sang. ... The deeper you go into understanding the OT, the closer you come to the heart of Jesus� (Wright, p ix, 2005). So why do we need the OT? Because the NT it is a continuation of the OT. (Brunner, 1964). The NT on its own is not the full story. Using the Gospel According to Matthew as a prime example � the very first verse (Matt 1:1) is an �account of the genealogy of Jesus ... son of David ... so......
