Numerous combat veterans experience traumatic effects from the brutality of war. When such war time experiences cause certain behaviors such as paranoia, irritability, and/or overall emotional numbness, it can be inferred that the veteran may very well have posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). With the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan still raging, the need to address the impact of PTSD on the lives of soldiers is extremely important. This research paper examines the effects that untreated PTSD can have on the lives of combat veterans and an actual crime committed by a veteran from which a profile well be derived. Before discussing the effects of PTSD, it is relevant to discuss the definition of the disorder. As a stress response, PTSD involves psychobiological clusters of symptoms; these symptoms involve re-experiencing phenomena, avoidance, numbing, being in states of hyper-arousal, having impaired self-functioning, and having negative interpersonal relations (Wilson & Keane, 2004).
