The word �intelligence� derives from the Latin root word �to understand� which in fact varies from with our initial impressions of intelligence as an individual being ��bright�� or ��on the ball��. Intelligence can be defined as something such as a skill or obtained knowledge from either learning or experience. Sternberg (1985) provides two major distinctions in theories of intelligence: explicit and implicit theories. Implicit theories are based on intuitive assumptions about the nature of intelligence and by contrast, explicit theories are based on proven data collated from the result of people performing tasks, ��presumed to repute intelligent functioning�� (P.135 cited in Fincham and Rhodes, 2005). An implicit theory implies that intelligence and success are not the outcome from hard work but intelligence is an innate ability; the idea that one is ��gifted��.
