The debate on stem cell research has been an ongoing issue since the use of stem cells, for medical purposes, became an option. Pro-life activists strongly disagree with conducting embryonic stem cell research, because in order to do the research, the embryo must be destroyed. Numerous restrictions have been placed on stem cell research which limit federal funding and halt some research all together. Recent discoveries have shown that there are new ways of obtaining stem cells without the destruction of an embryo. Scientists have proven that they can replicate embryonic stem cells by “reprogramming” cells taken from the skin. With new methods of stem cell research being done, which do not require the destruction of an embryo, most bans restricting the research should be lifted. Stem cells are of interest because they can transform themselves into healthier types of the same cell— liver stem cells can make other liver cells, brain stem cells to other brain cells.
