In the �Preface�, Francis Hill makes a cautious effort to clarify her reasons behind writing A Delusion of Satan. In 1992 when she first visited Salem she found that, despite the millions of words written on the subject there was a �lack of an accurate up-to-date narrative of the horrifying story of the Salem Witch Trials.� (Pg. XVI) As a native of London, England, she had researched the great witch-hunts that devastated Europe during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in which thousands of convicted witches were killed, afflicting Catholic and Protestant religions alike. Here we find another reason behind her writing, Hill realized how boredom, envy, a sense of injustice; that we all have experienced, can fester and explode into horrible destructive violence. There is nothing healing or spiritual about the story of Salem. It teaches something far more uncomfortable about the horrors that afflict our societies and even our own hearts. In Hill�s reconstruction of the Salem events she makes in clear that she wants to demonstrate how �bad religion� can be as destructive as atheis......
