Typically, the term �civilization� invokes the mental image of an organized, cohesive, technologically advanced society while the contrary would be that of a savage, underdeveloped smattering of people living off in the wilderness somewhere. However, when fewer visual aspects of �civilization� are considered and more substantial benchmarks examined, such as the organization of balanced government and legal systems, the common definition of �civilization� would most likely crumble. George Bancroft, a U.S. historian and statesman in the 1800�s, said, �The exact measure of the progress of civilization is the degree in which the intelligence of the common mind has prevailed over wealth and brute force� , and it appears that authors such as Joseph Conrad, Sigmund Freud, and Nadezhda Mandelstam, as well as directors like Nikita Mikhalkov, support Bancroft�s belief that social advancements are only truly made through thought and co-operation rather than violence.
