To try and change the minds of authoritative figures, suffragists and the suffragettes adopted different methods. The most noticeable difference was that the suffragettes utilised more violent techniques when carrying out demonstrations. In an attempt to change the minds of the liberal politicians on the matter of women�s suffrage, the NUWSS took a peaceful approach. They held meetings throughout Britain, collected petitions and distributed free literature. They also proposed their own independent male candidates to run against the opposing liberal politicians. The WSPU adopted a different style. When parliament opened on 23rd October 1906, a group of suffragettes arrived at the House of Commons determined to get their demands considered. When their request was refused, some climbed onto seats and made protest speeches whilst others linked arms in front for protection. The women were imprisoned for two months.
