Inequalities within the Workplace It is generally agreed that, in a rapidly changing and highly diversified world characterised by strong domestic and global competition, without structured teamwork and a sense of equality organisations struggle in their quest for survival (Pettengell, 2008, p. 12). A life-long commitment to staff, encouragement of communication, and anti-discrimination systems lay at the heart of social and economical success. Prevention of such is a basic requirement of management, even though a survey of 200 Australian students found that 86% faced age discrimination (Vorster, 2008, p. 4), 40% faced disability discrimination (Vorster, 2008, p. 4), and 75% faced gender discrimination. It follows, then, that managers face prejudice issues concerning gender, race, and age within the workplace.
