English Italian Sentence patterns (Syntax) Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Syntax refers to the relations among words in a sentence that provide the key to deciphering its meaning. Syntactic analysis thus involves the study of how words are combined to make sentences. This is why linguists like to characterize a sentence structurally as a sequence of words organized around a subject and a predicate. The subject is what or who the sentence is about; and the predicate is what the subject does, thinks, or says. There are many sentence patterns used in the English language, but there are seven basic sentence patterns that form out a true correct sentence. These patterns are as they follow each other: Pattern one: subject+verb, where the subject is the one who performs the action, and the verb is the one which the action is done to, and it must be transitive. To know whether this sentence pattern is the first you try to replace it with him/her/it/or them.
