Delegation: A Fundamental Management Skill �The most fundamental of all management skills is delegation -- getting things done through others� (Paauw, 2002). Delegation is the transfer of a duty or task to a subordinate worker. The subordinate performs the task and reports back to his or her boss the results of the assignment. Delegation sustains a mode of management which permits subordinates to develop and use skills and knowledge to the fullest potential. A key concept in delegation is entrusting power and influence to others. Handing over authority means that a subordinate can initiate and act on a task alone; and that the subordinate assumes responsibility for assigned tasks with the manager. �Some managers are comfortable delegating to subordinates; others are not� (Bateman, Snell, 2004).
