John Marsden's novel Tomorrow When the War Began shows that all the characters had to confront a difficult turning point or crisis in their personal lives. Some of the major turning points were Ellie's realisation that her personality changed dramatically when she had to make decisions on behalf of the group. Lee discovers that he is courageous in battle however he is also unable to help his friend's after he was shot. Homer's sudden realisation is that he has strong leadership qualities. All of these turning points are very significant parts of the book. John Marsden focuses on the difficulties these characters face, furthermore how they must react and keep their friendships together. In Tomorrow When the War Began Ellie is introduced as a normal teenage girl. Once the war has begun, Ellie and her friends have realised their terrible situation, she begins to notice that she must become a leader.
