Contemporary dance is a unique style which emerged in the 20th century; it starkly contrasted to other styles that had prevailed in previous eras as it has no definite structure. This free style approach allowed choreographers to create pieces with personal meaning and subsequently contemporary dance became a medium for choreographers to transmit powerful messages about social, political and cultural issues.
