History The company adidas was originated in the 1920's in Herzogenaurach Germany by Adolf "Adi" Dassler. The name of the company was then called Gebruder Dassler Schufabrik and it specialized in manufacturing slippers. In 1924 Adi's brother, Rudolf Dassler, joined the company and started making sports shoes specifically to enhance the performance of athletes in each particular sport. In 1928 Dassler's shoes were worn at the Olympics for the first time making them a popular choice for athletes. In 1936 Jesse Owens won four Olympic gold medals sporting a pair of Dassler's shoes. Rudolf Dassler left his brothers company in 1948 for undisclosed reasons and Adi continued to create shoes to improve the performance of athletes. Dassler's shoe company became the first to develop shoes designed specifically for certain sports including introducing spikes on soccer shoes. In 1949 Adi registered his company as adidas, named after its founder "Adi" from Adolf and the "das" from Dassler.
