In the history of western society, women have customarily led subservient lifestyles. Traditionally, a woman's main concentration in life was to serve her husband, keep house, and bear his children. The French Revolution in 1789 created a new idea in the minds of the European populace; they wanted their own rights. In fact, with the creation of the "Declaration of the Rights of Man," some of the early female feminist realized that as human beings, they too should be allowed to have their own set of rights. Thus began the women's rights movement that lasted from the end of the eighteenth century onwards, and some are free to argue that it is still in practice today. Only by the beginning of the 20th century did the efforts of women's rights activist become tangible. Women had finally been able to play more active roles in the larger economic, cultural, and political transformation of European society.
