Iago's Motivations Iago, a fictional character in Othello, is a wicked and manipulative villain, often considered as "honest Iago." Because of Iago's machinations, events lead to tragic episodes, such as Desdemona's death, and the destruction of his closest friends, including his wife. Iago establishes a dramatic irony that he makes the audience feel in connection with his villainy from the beginning of the plot. Each thing Iago says is cause for concern, yet he dedicates his whole life to revenge. But what drives Iago to commit such treacheries? Among other reasons, Iago is motivated by jealousy as it can be observed in Act 1, Scene 1 when Iago manifests his discontent for not receiving a promotion to the top post because Michael Cassio, who is an inexpert man to lead a battle, received it instead. Afterwards, his frustration makes him set an intricate plot to bring down Cassio, which ends in Cassio being demoted. Clearly, he is always surrounded with irony as it is also observed in his dialogue with Roderigo when he says: "I follow him to serve my turn upon him"(I.i.41-42......
