Dwarfism is a condition defined by short stature. That means that an adult that is 4foot 10 inches tall or shorter would be classified as a dwarf or with dwarfism. Dwarfism is caused by many different factors. Most of those factors are genetic. About the most common type of dwarfism is called achondroplasia and affects about 70% of the people. There are several different types of dwarfism and are known as skeletal dysplasia. Skeletal dysplasia is a form of abnormal bone growth. There is short-trunk and short-limb dysplasia. People that are born with short-trunk dysplasia have a short trunk (torso) with longer limbs (arms and legs). Those born with short-limb dysplasia have an average trunk (torso) and smaller limbs (arms and legs). There are three common forms of dysplasia: Spondyloepiphyseal dysplasias (SED); which is a group of short-trunked skeletal dysplasia conditions that are usually found 1 in 95,000 children born.
