For years the evolution theory has been taught as fact in public schools and universities across the United States and recently there has been much controversy over the issue. In the 1970's and 80's many states either banned the teaching of evolution or demanded that it be taught side by side with creationism as theory (Hyde). This lasted until the Supreme Court deemed this tactic unconstitutional in 1987 in the case Edwards v. Aguillard. The Court decided that teaching creationism in schools violated the separation of church and state and relied too much on the Bible for support and "lacked a clear secular purpose" (Hyde). By doing this the Court opened the door for professors and textbooks to teach the evolution theory as a fact and to push the creation theory to the backburners. Although the evolution theory must be taught in schools for educational purposes, textbooks should teach it as theory rather than fact leaving it up to the student to decide what he/she believes.
