"Sexuality n. the condition of being characterised or distinguished by sex." - Encarta World English Dictionary In traditional Romantic literature, the roles of male and female protagonists were highly stereotypical, depicting harsh divisions of power, status, control and influence. In reflection of these stereotypes, men were often portrayed as being powerful, aggressive and courageous figures of authority, while women, in order to be consistent with the mainstream values of society at the time, were shown to be passive, submissive and dependent on their male partners. Frequently, inequalities in wealth, age, education and sexual experience were considered necessary foundations for a successful relationship to blossom between a male and a female protagonist. In these highly patriarchal societies, the men of Romantic fiction would invariably overshadow the women, with a relationship between them being not one involving two equal adults, but rather a union between a wealthy, authoritarian father figure and a subservient, virginal "daughter".
