Civil War tour of Savannah - David D'Arcy Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

I learned a lot about Savannah's history from just reading this book. D'Arcy did a splendid job of showing every aspect of Savannah's contributions to the civil war. There was a key battle that took place right down the street from our homes. A lot of us don't even realize how important Savannah was to the South. The river placed a huge advantage on the South's transportation and tactical positioning. Savannah was a key port city that held a huge advantage to the heart of the Confederacy. All sorts of supplies came in from Europe to help aid the South in this brutal war of the wits. It was a key port mostly because of its positioning. It was well deep into the midst of the confederacy territory. It would have to be one of the last ports cities to be taken by the Union because it so far south. All the supply ships came in right through the river into downtown Savannah. These supplies included goods such as leather for making shoes and along with weaponry for the front lines. This along with the railroads from Atlanta, were the main sources of transportation for the South.......
