All six of the short stories written by the above authors share a common theme of the outsider, but vary greatly in how the idea of being an outsider, and how this status can affect actions and state of mind. "The Poor Relation's Story", by Dickens, features the main character shunned by every aspect of his life, leaving him only with a "Castle in The Air" to contemplate how things went so wrong. Similarly, "Lou the Prophet", by Cather, is the story of a man whose weak head and religious ideas have left him bound to society only through small children, furthered by his immigrant status. Wells' "The Stolen Bacillus" also has this theme, with political ideology leaving a man on the edge of society and his own group, pushing him to pre-meditated destruction to get him and his cause noticed, while in contrast, Poe's "Hop Frog" tells the story of a crippled dwarf, with no choice about his rejection from normality. He is instead cruelly mocked and scoffed at by a heartless King, and driven to take revenge. Similarly to "The Poor Relation's Story" and by the same author, "The Signalman" is ......
