Dehydration: The Danger of Disordered Eating Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Covering two thirds of the earth's surface and making up seventy five percent of the human body, it is evident that water is an essential element to all life. Water is crucial to every bodily function and when the body becomes dehydrated, it becomes incapable of working to its full potential. Dehydration occurs when fluid loss in the body is greater than the amount of fluid being taken in. Through means of self induced vomiting and the use of laxatives, diuretics and enemas, dehydration poses a serious threat to those suffering from bulimia nervosa. Many sources state that with early symptoms as simple as feelings of thirst, decreased urination and dry skin, nearly everyone has experienced the effects of dehydration. As the body's water volume continues to decrease, the effects worsen. Electrolyte abnormalities, liver problems, constipation, heat related illnesses, excessively active histamine and digestive problems are all potential risks of severe dehydration.
