Aim: The aim of this investigation is to find out whether the surface area of the metal has an effect on the rate of reaction in the chemical reaction Magnesium + Hydrochloric acid → Magnesium chloride + Hydrogen, (Mg +2HCl → MgCl2 + H2). Hypothesis I think that the more surface area there is, the faster the reaction will be. For example, I think that when the surface area of the magnesium is 4 strip of 0.5cm that the rate of reaction will be very fast and when the surface area is just one single strip of magnesium of 2cm long, the rate of reaction will be much slower. My reason for saying this is because as the surface area increases, there are more magnesium particles that need to react with the Hydrochloric acid particles. If there are more particles there is a much higher chance of collision between the magnesium particles and the hydrochloric acid particles, and therefore the reaction will occur a lot faster.
