Using examples from the most famous German expressionist film (and personal favorite), The Cabinet Of Dr. Caligari, along with illustrations from Sunrise and The Maltese Falcon, we can realize qualities of expressionism that survive through to film noir. Historical factors of 1920s Germany gave rise to artistic progress and transformation that later impacted Hollywood of the 1930s and 1940s. And each of the genres share technical qualities, primarily in the visual language. At the time Robert Weine created Caligari (1920), the socio-economic environment stimulated German artists to embark on a new movement. The post WWI atmosphere left the county struggling with economic ruin, political fallout, and social collapse. The horror of trench warfare and mechanized battle was burned into the country's psyche. Artist's sentiments poured into their work. Their rebellion against traditional forms transferred into extravagant atmospheres with extremely stylized visuals to convey psychological states of the subject.
