After the completion of the Treaty of Versailles there where very few satisfied with the final terms and conditions. The French had had their land torn apart and their population devastated (1.4 million military dead) during World War One and understandably demanded that the Germans suffer like they had. Whilst the US and Britain where not so keen to harshly persecute. The overall compromise made was not harsh enough in the eyes of the French and far too harsh in the eyes of the US and Britain. But it was the Germans who despised the treaty most of all, especially Article 231(War guilt clause) and the absurd 6.6 billion pound reparations they now owed. But in the face of all this anger and frustration would rise Adolf Hitler; an opportunist who used the German publics resentment to rise to power and turn Germany into a totalitarian state under his command. This essay will show how Hitler gained prestige by challenging and undermining the terms of the treaty that he saw as an injustice.
