Zoo elephants swaying from side to side, cheetahs pacing endlessly, and manic monkeys grooming themselves to baldness. This disturbed trance-like behavior is a result of the lack of stimulus afforded to animals in captivity. However, to combat the positive aspect of zoos, it is also important to consider the roles they play in our society and to examine the next step after zoos. Some say zoos serve important purposes, including offering access to researchers, providing money and expertise for habitat preservation elsewhere, and as repositories of genetic material for quickly vanishing species. However, studies have shown animal sanctuaries to be just as beneficial to researchers as zoos and the cost of maintaining the institution leaves minimum leftover funding to go to preservation projects elsewhere. The growth of television media (such as The Discovery Channel) allows city dwellers a new outlet to marvel at nature and has long eclipsed the educational purposes of zoos.
