The obvious choice for such a huge and complex organization is to adopt a Bureaucratic structure. As already discussed that Indian Railways adopted Zonal structure in 1952.With lying of new lines, increase in volume of traffic and to have operational ease the nos. of Zones went on increasing. Presently there are 16 zones in Indian Railways. There are also seven Production units. Each zone and each production unit is headed by one General Manager. These General Managers are Administrative head of particular Railway Zone./Production units. There is one Research & Design Organization (RDSO) which looks after all design and aspects of all technical functionalities headed by a Director General.
