Class setting in The Great Gatsby Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

F. Scott Fitzgerald, in his novel The Great Gatsby conveys judgements about his contemporary society, 1920s America. He does this by creating an allegorical undercurrent to his plot line. The specific characters and settings I will discuss are Jay Gatsby, Daisy Buchanan, and the valley of ashes. The events of The Great Gatsby take place in the world Fitzgerald himself lived in. It was written, set and widely read in the Roaring Twenties, or the Jazz Age as Fitzgerald coined it. On the affluent East Coast of the United States of America, the 1920s were an era of change. The returned soldiers of World War One were intensely disillusioned with the stuffy, strict social codes of the previous Victorian era, and nearly all areas of society reflected this newfound rebellion against traditional values. One of the most notable examples of this was the emergence of "flappers", the name given to the young ladies of the 1920s who abandoned the neck to ankle dresses and corsets of the pre-war era and replaced them with elegant knee length dresses and full makeup.
