Whale Rider directed by Niki Caro is a New Zealand film about a young Maori girl named Paikea and her hardships as she tries to become accepted by her grandfather, as leader of her tribe. Her grandfather Koro, places so much importance on the tribe's ancestry and the tradition of a first born son being the next chief. When the first born son dies, and Pai lives; he fails to acknowledge the leadership qualities that Pai possesses in which to fulfil her destiny. Caro uses various film techniques to depict the importance of the scenes in the chapter Paikea's Whale. In the scenes when Pai first comes in contact with the whale and when she starts to ride the whale, Caro creates a mystical atmosphere with the use of film techniques. The music that accompanies Pai when she connects with the whale is eerie but strong as it is very deep and low, it helps emphasise the connection that Paikea has with the whale. When Pai is connected with the whale instead of Koro, when he told her to stay away, highlights that she was the chosen leader and that he is still trying to oppress her true calling......
