1.0 ABSTRACT The aim of this experiment is to lift a 50g weight attached to a balloon filled with a gas that is lighter than air. The gas has to be produced on site, meaning that an effective method of producing this gas would have to be discovered. To be able to achieve this aim, the lightest possible gas would be needed. This gas would also have to be cheaply, quickly and easily produced by a suitable method. The gas needs to be safe to use also, meaning that the gas would have to be non-poisonous and not dangerous to use, to prevent injury. After researching a series of unique gases, it was found that Hydrogen would be the most suitable gas to fit all the requirements. Hydrogen is the lightest gas in existence and it is easily made. It was discovered that there were three different methods of producing this gas, including, 'Electrolysis of Water', 'Acid and Metal' and an 'Alkali and Metal'. The 'Alkali and Metal' reaction proved to be the most effective method of producing hydrogen as the reaction is cheap, quick, effective and produces a large amount of hydrogen in a short amou......
