Women of the Odyssey Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

Women in the Odyssey may not have had legal rights but they had power and control. They played many roles in this epic poem. They were the backbone in many situations. We will examine women of the Odyssey, who they were and the roles they played in this epic poem by Homer. Penelope is the mother of Telemachus and wife of Odysseus, king of Ithaca, whom she hasn't seen in twenty years. Although faced by temptation of the suitors vying for her and pressuring her to remarry, she remains faithful to her husband. She shows she is clever when she puts the suitors off by saying she will finally remarry when she completes the burial shroud that was for the future funeral of her elderly father-in-law. She would weave all day and then at night unweave what she did during the day so she would have no progress and therefore not have to remarry. She continued this for three years until a servant discovered this façade and betrayed Penelope by telling the suitors of this deed. When Odysseus finally returns to Ithaca in disguise, Penelope tells him (whether or not she knew it was him is debatable......
