Doris Lessing's novel The Grass is Singing was published in 1950 and regarded as the "most successful colonial novel since The Story of an African Farm [...] in 1883." It is a political novel which deals with racial polarity and ideology. In The Grass is Singing Doris Lessing demonstrates how the colonial myth collides with real life. Lessing shares the myth but shows how it clashes with reality; she shows what "African life" - or at least "African life" as she defines and experienced it - is really like. The authorial omniscience in the novel is limited to white characters and the reader is confronted with a small colonial society in Southern Rhodesia regulated by white dominance. It depicts what would be "labelled an exotic locale - a white outpost in a remote colony." Lessing's novel focuses on the protagonist Mary and the marriage of the Turners. It is a depiction of the couples failed attempt to battle with the colonial society's norms and expectations telling them what to be and how to behave.
