Lesson by Toni Cade Bambara Free Essay, Term Paper and Book Report

The short story "The Lesson" by Toni Cade Bambara is a motivational one for adults as well as children. The theme of the story is analyzing the effects of socioeconomic class differences throughout America, and the way an educated black woman uses her education and experiences to educate the children in her neighborhood. Most of the children resent her because they would rather be playing and doing other things, however, Miss Moore wants to broaden their horizons and see more than just their ghetto neighborhood. In the beginning of the story we learn that the narrator Sylvia and her cousin Sugar live on the same block as Miss Moore. The cousins do not like Miss Moore: "And we kinda hated her [Miss Moore] too" (356). Miss Moore was "the only person on the block with no first name" (356). This is a sign of respect. Miss Moore demands respect because she is an educated woman. Most of the people in the neighborhood go by just their first name because of their social status.
